Village Voice - 26th February 2004
LEAP YEAR DAY
This year's Benefice Day, to be held this Sunday (29th February), will be celebrating almost thirteen years of working together by the churches of the Knightley Parishes – and thinking about the next thirteen years. The day will start at 9.30am with a service of Holy Communion at Newnham church. The celebrant will be the Archdeacon of Northampton, Michael Chapman, who will give a keynote sermon. All parishioners are invited – please bring a packed lunch (drinks provided) – and the day will finish around 2.00pm.
CHURCHYARD MOWING
A reminder that there is a meeting for all past volunteers – and any new ones! – on Monday, 8 th March, at 8.00pm in the church to plan the 2004 rota (refreshments provided). The church machine is currently being serviced and cutting will probably need to start before Easter. If you would like to offer your services (usually only one or two mowings a year with sufficient volunteers), or would like further information, please contact Gerard Hoare on 01327-361570.
PARISH COUNCIL
The following items were discussed at last week's parish council meeting.
Noticeboard for Little Preston – This is in hand. A suitable location will need to be discussed in due course.
Broadband Internet Access – Penny Eves reported that a recent mailing around Everdon and Farthingstone (the villages who share our telephone exchange) has resulted in a further two dozen or so registrations for broadband access (of the 100 registrations required to reach our trigger level, 69 have now been made). Councillors agreed that it was necessary for Preston Capes to undertake a similar exercise, and a draft document will be prepared for distribution as soon as possible.
Speed Limits in Preston Capes – The clerk reported that the safety camera team have apparently visited the village three times recently (although not at the specifically requested times), and over a dozen motorists had exceeded the speed limit. A further request for a visit at “rush hour” times will be made.
Speed Limits in Little Preston – The proposed 30mph speed limit will be published for comment soon.
Regrouping of Village Signs – NCC have spoken to the WASP representative at DDC who has confirmed that funds are available for this work, and it will be carried out shortly.
Road Repairs for Old Forge Lane – There are two large potholes outside The Smythy, plus one on the sharp bend further up the road. It was also agreed that the road surface needs to be levelled at the village hall entrance. The parish council highways representative will be asked to arrange a meeting with Atkins to discuss these and any other problems around the village.
Diary Dates – Forthcoming parish council meetings: Thursdays 18th March, 15th April (to include AGM) and 20th May. Saturday, 20th March: WI coffee morning Village hall AGM: Tuesday, 20th April. Village annual general meeting: Thursday, 27th May.
